US Lawmakers Say No to $875m Arms Sale to Nigeria over Human Rights Violations
The hope of Nigeria acquiring arms worth $875 million from US appears to have been dashed as the lawmakers in that country have stopped the deal.
The reason given by the lawmakers in refusing to approve the deal was poor human rights record of President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a report by Foreign Policy Magazine, lawmakers on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee are the ones kicking against such sales.
The arms include 12 AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters and accompanying defence systems which Nigeria wants to acquire for the Nigerian Army.
It was also reported that the US lawmakers are also against the sale of 28 helicopter engines produced by GE Aviation, 14 military-grade aircraft navigation systems as well as 2,000 advanced precision kill weapon systems.
However, in a reaction by the Presidency, Nigeria will get the assistance it seeks from the US government.
