Buhari: Am Committed to One Nigeria, Lifting Socio-economic Life of Citizens
*Gowon,IBB, Obasanjo, others absent at celebration
President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday said he is committed to ensuring that Nigeria remains one country.
Buhari also said during the June 12 Democracy Day celebration that he is also committed to ensuring that the socio-economic life of the people is uplifted.
The President who said is involved at close quarters in the struggle to keep one Nigeria also he will for this reason dedicate the rest of his life to achieving this.
Noting that the country has given so much to him, the President said this means that he has no reason not to give back to the country his best.
“I have had the privilege of free education from primary school to Staff College to War College. “ I received my formative education in Katsina and Kaduna and my higher education in England, India, and the United States.
“I have worked and served in Kaduna, Lagos, Abeokuta, Makurdi, Port Harcourt, Maiduguri, Ibadan, Jos, and finally here in Abuja.
“Throughout my adult life, I have been a public servant. “I have no other career but public service. I know no service but public service.’’
. “Before and during my time in the Armed Forces and in government, I had interacted with Nigerians of all ages and persuasions and different shades of opinion over a period of more than fifty years. “During the 2002 to 2003 campaigns and elections, I travelled by road to 34 of the 36 states of the federation. “In 2019 I travelled by air to all 36 states of the federation. And my firm belief is that our people, above all, want to live in peace and harmony with their fellow Nigerians. They desire opportunities to better themselves in a safe environment.’’
He assured that his second term in office will be to consolidate on his past achievements during the first time in office.
Meanwhile former Presidents and military Heads State Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Ibrahim Babangida, Ernest Shonekan and General Yakubu Gowon were absent during the June 12 celebration.
During the ceremony, the President announced the renaming of the Abuja Stadium after Chief Moshoof Abiola who won the June 12 election that was annulled by the military government.
Among those present at the event were the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo who welcomed the President and newly elected leadership of the National Assembly.
