Tin Can Customs Command Intercepts N4.7bn Worth of Drugs, Arms

The Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted drugs and arms worth N4.7bn at the port.
This was disclosed by the Area Controller of the Command, Compt Frank Onyeka, in Lagos.
The drugs were 55 jumbo bags of cannabis indica in 2,366 packages, he said.
According to the Controller, “Precisely on Wednesday, January 28,2026, after an extensive physical examination conducted by our officers, alongside other relevant agencies, which included the operatives of the NDLEA and the Department of State Services (DSS), with the declarant, a 40ft container was found to contain 55 jumbo bags of cannabis Indica and one colt’s MK IV series 70.45 Automatic Caliber Pistol (S419) with one empty magazine”
He disclosed that the items were discovered during examination, adding that they were concealed and undeclared in 3 used vehicles – 1 used Hyundai Santa Fe, 1 used Toyota Sienna 1 used Toyota Matrix.
Oneyka said that items will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.
Hew also said the firearms will be handed over to the relevant authority soon.
The Controller warned that the Service will not tolerate drug smuggling or transactional crime, adding that those caught will face the wrath of the law.
Meanwhile, the Customs Command collected N1,609,874,328,972.55 trillion between January and December 2025.
The figure is described as a major breakthrough in the Command’s revenue collection history.
The Controller of the Command disclosed the revenue figure during an award ceremony held in honour of some officers for their dedication to duty and professionalism.
Onyeka said that with the figure, the Command surpassed its revenue target for last year by ₦85,204,329,494.03, adding that the revenue target was ₦1,524,669,999,478.52.
He described the revenue figure as an achievement, stating that it was as a result of improved efficiency and transparency.
He said, “A tree can never make a forest. I could not have done it alone, too much has been given to us, much is expected. Officers deserve appreciation for their tireless efforts”.
Onyeka said that the award ceremony was mainly to recognize diligence, professionalism and shared responsibility as has been the culture of the Service.
