AKUTAH AND THE PORTS POLICE COMMISSIONER DURING THE VISIT RECENTLY..

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) have been holding strategic collaborations with relevant agencies as part of the efforts to achieve efficient trade facilitation at the seaports.
The Council recently met with the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and the Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy in a bid to deepen collaboration in boosting port efficiency and strengthening maritime security.
At a meeting between the the NPF Port Authority Police (Western) and Council during a courtesy visit to his office, the Executive Secretary of the NSC, Dr. Akutah Pius stressed the need to check issues of operational bottlenecks that have affected clearing of goods at the ports.
Akutah had during the meeting called for the promotion of collaboration through intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement plans.

He said it is important for both agencies of the government which operate in the ports to synergize to achieve ports efficiency.
He maintained that effective collaboration among stakeholders will help in improving on the cargo dwell time at the ports, adding that the determination of the ports economic regulator is to end unnecessary disruptions in the ports.
He pointed out that it is wrong to arrest containers that have already been cleared at the ports, saying there should be better coordination to check such issues.
Akutah said that collaboration has the advantage of promoting seamless movement of goods , improve regulatory enforcement and lead to improve port competitiveness.
He called on the agencies in the ports to come together in reviewing police alert mechanism and work in synergy to reduce insecurity in the ports environment.
The Commissioner of Police, Port Authority Police (Western) Command, Oluwatoyin Iyabode Agbaminoja, while describing the NSC as key agency in Nigeria’s maritime governance structure assured that the Command is always commited to providing security for the benefit of port users and infrastructure.
She assured that the Command will continue to improve on Command’s cooperation in checking emerging security threats as well as operational challenges in the ports.
She added that the Command will ever be ready to support the ports economic regulator to carry out its statutory obligations in dispute resolution, enforcement of lawful activities, port user protection and monitoring of cargo movement within the port corridor.
In a similar courtesy visit to the Council by the Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy, both assured their commitment to deepen collaboration to boost port efficiency, maritime security and move Nigeria’s blue economy forward.
The Executive Secretary/CEO, Akutah Pius and the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Abubakar Mustapha, maintained that maritime security remains indispensable to trade facilitation.
Both observed that this was because over 90 per cent of global cargo is moved by sea.
The Executive Secretary said the Navy has always been a strategic partner in ensuring cargo safety and operational stability, adding that ongoing NSC reforms include reducing cargo dwell time, promoting port automation, and preparing for the implementation of the National Single Window project.
Akutah commended the Navy for its efforts in reducing piracy issues, noting that improved security has been of tremendous improvement to global shipping confidence.
He also said it helped Nigeria’s case for removal from war risk classifications that have led to inflation in freight costs.
The two added that more collaboration and improved maritime domain awareness through technology, as well as continuous stakeholders engagement remain crucial and capable of stabilizing Nigeria’s port environment and boost national economic growth.
The Naval boss was full of commendation to the Council for its regulatory reforms.
He pointed out key naval operations, such as Exercise Omi Ailewu, ember-month patrols, and the Chief of Naval Staff Annual Sea Inspection Exercise, CASI when over 16 vessels were deployed to reinforce Nigeria’s maritime presence.
