NPERA DG, Akutah, Assures Stakeholders of Collaboration, Promises to Work with NPA, Others to Deepen Reforms, Efficient Service Delivery

The Director-General of Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency, (NPERA), Dr. Akutah Pius, has allayed the fears of stakeholders over the new powers of the agency, saying that there will not be any institutional rivalry.
Akutah explained that the law makes it clear with the role of NPERA as the ports economic regulator.
He added that what NPERA sets out to do is to “promote a healthy sector that will grow the economy of Nigeria”
He said the agency will work with all the sister agencies and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in particular to deepen reforms and bring about increased service delivery in the ports sector.
Akutah who spoke during a townhall meeting with members of staff urged the personnel to be more committed in professionalism under the new mandate of the agency.
He said that part of the transition from the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to NPERA should be a clear shift in work culture and operational attitude so as to achieve delivery as effective economic regulator in Nigerian ports.
The DG described the assent of the NPERA as a major breakthrough for the maritime sector, adding that it will strengthen the powers of the agency to control sharp practices in the system and improve efficiency in the ports.
He also said it will promote Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global port sector.
He added, “The NPERA Act has strengthened our regulatory powers to institute effective regulation at the ports. With this mandate, we are positioned to drive efficiency, transparency and competitiveness in the port sector”.
He stated that the expanded responsibilities of the agency will contribute in a more significant way to the efforts of the Government to build a `$1 trillion economy.
This, according to him, will be by creating a more predictable and friendly business environment in the ports.
He applauded President Tinubu for the assent of the bill, adding that this will reposition the agency as a full-fledged economic regulator.
Akutah had last week disclosed the assent of the NPERA) Bill by President Tinubu.
In the face book post, Akutah was full of appreciation to the President for the assent.
Akutah wrote, “Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency Act, 2026. Thank you Mr.President for making it a reality,”
It would be recalled that the efforts to get the bill passed have been on for over 12 years.
