NAFDAC Plans to Destroy 3 Containers of Seized Expired Pharmaceuticals by Tin Can Customs Command

The National Agency For Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) has concluded plans to destroy three containers of expired pharmaceuticals which were handed over to the organization by the Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) last week.
A source close to the agency disclosed that the pharmaceuticals were among other dangerous drugs that have been slated for destruction by the agency since they constitute health risk to the country.
However, it was gathered that the date and time when the drugs would be destroyed have not been made public.
It would be recalled that the Tincan Island Command which seized the drugs handed over the three containers to NAFDAC Friday last week.
Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Customs Area Controller at Tincan Island during the handover ceremony maintained that the Command was committed to ensuring that dangerous drugs will not be allowed through the port because of their public health hazard.

He said that the Command will go to any length to ensure that no consignment with health or security risk is allowed into the port.
Onyeka who spoke to stakeholders explained that the seizures were part of the Command’s anti-smuggling measures, saying it was in the best interest to protect Nigerians.
The containers with numbers PONU031958/6 and MSKU711656/0 had as their contents expired tramadol.
Examination of the two containers showed that the containers had 86 cartons of Vingil Tramadol BP 50mg and 250 cartons of the same product.
The third container with number MSKU413519/1, had 370 cartons of expired Diclofenac Sodium BP 50mg tablets without a valid NAFDAC registration number.
Onyeka said, “This consignment is illegal and dangerous for public consumption,” Onyeka warned the public about the health risk and danger these drugs could cause.
“The command proactively intercepts controlled pharmaceuticals, arms, ammunition, narcotics, and items threatening public safety and economic stability”.
The Controller said there has been tremendous improvement in enforcement by the Command , adding that it has been strengthened to facilitate trade as well as contribute to revenue generation in accordance with the mandate of the Service.
He said, “These achievements result from discipline, integrity, and strong inter-agency collaboration”
The Controller commended NAFDAC for its cooperation and synergy, which according to him, has checked fake, substandard and expired drugs from entering the hands of the general public.
The NAFDAC’s Chief Regulatory Officer, Mr Kareem Adekunle, had given indication that the drugs would destroyed by burning.
