The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Wednesday announced the seizure of massive consignment of illicit drugs at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.
The market value of the drugs according to the Customs Area Controller of Tincan Island Port Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka was put at N16.6bn.
Onyeka told newsmen in Lagos that the drugs, 8,347 packages of cannabis sativa weighing 4,173.5 kilograms were concealed in a 40-foot container which came from Canada.
The drugs were officially handed over to the NDLEA officials at a joint press conference at the port.
The Controller described the seizure as a clear indication that the drug syndicates have been doing everything possible to use Nigerian ports to smuggle offensive substances.
He said that the success in the operation showed determination by the customs operatives, heightened vigilance, professionalism, and collaboration among security agencies in the port.
The Controller said that officers of the Enforcement Unit on intercepting the container HAMU247034 decided to carry out physical examination following intelligence reports.
He added, “The container was found to contain 8,347 packages of cannabis sativa weighing 4,173.5 kilograms with an estimated street value of ₦16.6 billion. This is not just another seizure; it represents a deliberate attempt by criminal elements to threaten national security and profit from the destruction of innocent lives, especially our youths.”
