The plan by the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority’s (NPA) to deploy the electronic Call-Up System at Onne Port has received the support of Truck Park operators in the area.
The idea to deploy the electronic Call-Up System is mainly to tackle any issue of persistent congestion in the Eastern Ports corridor.
Importers, customs agents and other stakeholders believe that the move by the NPA will go a long way in improving ports efficiency and protect billions of Naira invested in the trucking and logistics businesses.
Chairman of the Nigerian Port Consultative Council (NPCC), Onne Chapter, Mr. Godwin Ololuke, told newsmen that the NPA electronic call-up system will soon take off, adding that arrangements to this effect have been in top gear.
Ololuke disclosed that the truck park operators recently met with the NPA management through the Port Manager in Onne for briefing on the operational details.
He explained that the plan is aimed at regulating truck movements in and around the port environment for the purpose of a better port environment, safety for businesses, commuters, schoolchildren and neighbouring communities.
One of the truck drivers, Mr. Johnbull Igbikiowubo, described the plan as a welcome development, adding that no one will be against such arrangement.

He said, “The cooperation of stakeholders is essential to ensure its success for the benefit of everyone involved and the nation’s economy.”
It was gathered that one of the reasons for the disorder experienced around the port in recent weeks was as a result of the rush to register trucks under the new system.
The belief is that once this exercise stabilises, there will be improvement in traffic flow and operational discipline .
The Lagos ports have since been operating under the electronic call-up system, a policy that has improved on traffic around the ports environment.
