A report by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, released Monday has said the over 82.9 million or about 40 per cent of Nigerians have been classified as poor as at 2019.
The NBS said that its calculations was on the basis that the value of the national poverty line was equal to N137,430 per person, anually, adding that when a Nigerian’s consumption expenditure was below N137,430 per year, it means such individual is considered poor.
According to the report, “In Nigeria, 40.1 percent of total population were classified as poor. In other words, on average, four out of 10 individuals in Nigeria has real per capita expenditure below N137,430 per year.
“This translates to over 82.9 million Nigerians who are considered poor by national standards. It is important to note that this number excludes the state of Borno.
“While the Nigerian Living Standards Survey, NLSS, 2018-19 includes households from Borno, that sample was not representative of the whole state since only households from “accessible” (safe-to-visit areas only) were interviewed. Thus, the Borno sample is considered non-random and non-representative.”
