Maritime Workers Suspend Strike Against Shipping Lines as Shippers’ Council Intervenes

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has suspended its industrial action against shipping lines following the intervention of the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Hon Emmanuel Jime.
The suspension of the strike which started on Monday was to allow for negotiation with the shipping lines for a period of one month.
The Union and representatives of the Shipping Companies/ Agencies & Freight forwarders Employers Association had met at the NSC office where they entered into dialogue.
Jime had during the meeting called negotiation between the Union and the shipping lines who were represented by Comrade Adewale Adeyanju and Mr Ascanio Russo.
After deliberations, the parties issued a communique:
“Maritime Workers Union and Shipping Companies/Agencies and Freight Forwarders Employers Association expressed commitment for sincere negotiations on the Minimum Standard of Condition of Service in the Industry
“Parties agreed to a timeline of One Month starting from Monday 5th June 2023 to 4th July 2023 for completion of the negotiations.
“Parties to establish an acceptable Minimum Standards on the Condition of Service in the Shipping Industry especially on gratuity”
