Maritime Industry Stakeholders Renew Call for Passage of Coast Guard Bill

Maritime industry stakeholders have renewed the call for the passage of the Coast Guard Bill by the National Assembly.
In a statement issued by the Chairman/CEO of New Cosmic Maritime Limited, Samuel Babatunde Olukanni , and sent to SHIPPING DAY, the stakeholders said the passage will further help in ensuring proper implementation of the waterways safety code.
Olukanni in the statement identified Captain Sunday Sekenimde, Captain Melphord Oji, Captain Wisdom Eseigbe and others, as among the stakeholders who believe that the passage of coast guard bill has become very important.
The statement expressed appreciation to the His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu , Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola, Senator Etim Eyakenyi and Senator Wasiu Eshilokun for their tremendous role to pass the Nigerian Coast Guard Bill.
“They saw the maritime problem and they proffered solution to the issues in our coastal domain like maritime security, anti-piracy marine environment protection and closing the net on illegal, unreported & unregulated fishing. Posterity will bear them witness as they renew our hopes and aspirations. Embracing Renewed Hope Agenda, It’s worthy to note that the establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard is a Renewed Hope Maritime Innovation Initiative in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR Renewed Hope Agenda”, according to Olukanni, .
He added, “The coast guard is very important. It’s appalling that a maritime nation like Nigeria does not have a Coast Guard. Setting up a Coast Guard in a country is a complex process that requires careful planning, legal backing, infrastructure, equipment, and trained personnel”.
According to Olukanni, “the Nigerian Coast Guard will ensure that safety regulations are adhered to on our waterways, rate of accidents on the waterway is eradicated and we’ll conduct periodic vital safety sensitization and training session for all boat operators. The Coast Guard will also assist in the protection of the coastal highway by protecting with honour the lives, properties and investor’s funds”.

He promised that the Coast Guard achievement report will be published periodically for Nigerians to see, adding that the establishment “will shape Nigeria’s maritime future and preserve our marine ecosystem for posterity sake”.
