The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Wednesday called stakeholders to a meeting on how to improve on multimodal transport system, specifically the movement of goods by rail.
Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Babatunde Olomu whose motive was on improving trade facilitation further explained that the meeting was on the instance of the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi.
Olomu added that the idea of the CGC was to improve logistics through multimodal transport.
Among those who attended the meeting were freight forwarders, shipping companies, representatives of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and others.
Olomu told stakeholders, “Recall that rail has been in operation for quite a while, so we want to fine-tune the process to improve our trade objectives. When we have a seamless trade process, it will benefit our stakeholders who are here today.”
The Area Controller commended the stakeholders for attending, adding that their participation was simply a way of boosting confidence which reinforces the goal to achieve efficient cargo transportation.
Head of Operations, NRC, Akin Oshinowo, expressed the readiness to always cooperate with the Service, adding that it was always been so to achieve a common goal.
Oshinowo said, “We have always found a willing partner in the Comptroller and his men, which forms part of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) established years ago.
“The discussion we had today aligns with the NRC’s objectives and supports the renewed hope agenda for rail transportation in Nigeria”.
Freight forwarders who were at the event commended the Customs for the initiatives, adding that it will reduce the high cost of imports as well as bring about more efficiency in cargo delivery.
The National Coordinator of the Save Nigeria Freight Forwarders, Importers & Exporters Coalition, Mr. Osita Chukwu, was not left out in appreciating the initiative.
Osita said, “With what the government is doing, we hope it will not be limited to just one region but extended across the entire country, as is the case elsewhere.”
