The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, has appointed Deputy Comptroller Abubakar Lucky Aliyu as the new National Co-ordinator for the Operation Whirlwind Team.

He takes over from Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) IK Oladeji who has been redeployed to the Enforcement, Inspection and Investigation (E I &I) at the Headquarters.

Aliyu who is also an expert in counter Terrorism and Insurgency has been Deputy National Co-ordinator until last week.

His wealth of experience cuts across academics, customs enforcement and general administration.

At his investiture on Friday as one of the professors by the Omniversity Imperial College, with headquarters in Missouri, United States of America.

Aliyu in his defence of the award went memory lane , speaking about the root cause of smuggling, terrorism and insurgency in an environment such as ours.

According to him, the use of illicit drugs remains a major factor that fuels smuggling, terrorism and assorted crimes largely by the youths.

As an instructor, he deposed that people must engage themselves meaningfully before the society can be better off.

He also attributed insecurity to the inability of those concerned to opt for legal means of livelihood while resorting to cheap means of making money.

The National Co-ordinator described smuggling as a danger to any nation, as it puts local production in jeopardy while building the fortunes of other countries of the world.
Having taken a vow as an officer, he maintained that he would strive harder to see that smuggling is reduced to the minimum, noting that the country would advance to greater heights and be well positioned to earn the much needed foreign exchange.
The award of professor of practice, according to the management of the college is aimed at encouraging graduates of the school to produce practically what they have learnt in school.

The President of the Omniversity in Lagos, Prof. Akersdolu-Ale noted that it was becoming an embarrassment to see someone who calls himself a professor of electrical or mechanical engineering not to be able to fix a light or his car engine with minor faults.
According to him, ‘we looked and thought there should be a way to measure quality.
The practice is the missing link’

Also, former Director General of the NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside corroborated the position of the management of the college, saying school curriculum should be reworked to suit the vagaries of the present day challenges.

He stated ; you can not use the equipment deployed in world war 1 to fight the kind of modern wars we have today.
Mrs Ibidapo-Obe representing the Lagos state commissioner of education spoke of the strategic plan of the education ministry, championing education and economic revolution.
All speakers at the well attended investiture programme were united at evolving practice-based education and skill recognition implementation.
Dr Dakuku Peterside was among the fellows inducted into the institution on Friday.
