(FleetMon) A crewmember of the three-masted, full-rigged school ship, DANMARK, was killed when he fell off the mast he was working on. The victim was a 23-year-old Danish citizen. The accident occurred when the ship was at the port of Assens.
The victim fell from the mast at 1145 hours local time and was quickly taken to Odense University Hospital, where, at 1320 hours, he was pronounced dead. An investigation has been opened into Denmark’s Labor safety regulator and the Danish Maritime Authority.

DANMARK is homeported in Copenhagen and is owned by the Danish Government. It is run by a maritime academy for training ordinary seamen. Onboard the ship, 80 trainees can be accommodated at a time. Accidentally falling from tall, masted ships is an unfortunate occupational hazard and is a frequent occurrence. This accident is the second one this month, earlier a volunteer was killed when he fell from the rigging of the tall ship ELISSA when it was docked at Galveston, Texas. In July 2020, another casualty was a 19-year-old who fell while rigging on a tall ship Dar Mlodziezy. This happened during a brief sail from the port of Gydnia.
