NPA, Shippers Council, LASG Move Against Illegal Checkpoints Around Apapa Ports Environment

Maritime industry stakeholders, including the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) weekend teamed up with the Lagos state government to end illegal checkpoints around Apapa ports environment.
The illegal checkpoints are mounted by both uniformed and uniformed security personnel in what has been found to simply extort money from truck drivers.
At a meeting held recently, stakeholders expressed dismay over the illegal checkpoints and the negative effect on traffic situation in Apapa.
The stakeholders as a meeting which was organized by the ports economic regulator, NSC, said there was the urgent need to sanitise the access roads, adding that the extortion by security personnel was getting out of hand.
Director, Consumer and Monitoring Affairs Department at Shipper Council, Chief Cajetan Agu, who stood in for the Executive Secretary, Emmanuel Jime made it clear that the truck drivers should stop giving money to any security officer for whatever reason.
The representative of the NPA, . Mr. Jamiu Anda Emmanuel said the all non-state actors should be chased out of the ports to ensure sanity in the ports environment. ,
An Assistant Director at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation Mr. Olayinka Olawale charged the Abandoned Vehicles Committee to do their job well by clearing the traffic in Apapa area.
He said it was time for the Committee to move into action, but advised that those whose vehicles are arrested should ask for tickets.
The National Organising Secretary of COMTUA, Collin Ekene Dike pointed out that the traffic issues in Apapa is being compounded by LASTMA officials, saying truck owners who have mechanical issues with their trucks are not allowed to touch their vehicles.
Ekene did not speak well of the members of the Lagos State Task Force on Abandoned Vehicle, saying they issue tickets, collect cash from truck drivers and abandon the vehicles.
Besides, he said the Lagos State Task Force was in the habit of impounding vehicles on trumped up charges.
