Navy, NCDMB to Set Up Joint Committee on Maritime Security
The Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) on Thursday said they will set up a joint committee on maritime security.
The idea is to address issues of perennial security in oil locations in the country.
The plan was announced by the Executive Secretary of NCDMB, Mr. Simbi Wabote during a meeting with the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Zubairu Gambo in Abuja.
Wabote explained that the partnership was necessary considering the threat posed by insecurity on the waterways.
He said that the plan to enforce the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act in maritime operations would address the issue of the use of non-compliant and non-categorised vessels.
He added that by collaborating with the Navy, illegal vessels and aberrant crew would be stopped from impinging on Nigeria’s oil and gas assets.
He said the Navy would be required to drive the security aspect of the industry’s operations by checking piracy and illegal oil bunkering.
He described Navy’s role as necessary in protecting the ol infrastructure.
Wabote added that the Board plans to increase the Nigerian content level from 40 to 70 percent by the year 2027.
