Fuel Scarcity Looms as NUPENG Threatens Strike
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas
on Monday gave the Federal Government two weeks to address workers’ welfare of face industrial action.
The Union said it would call out its members for strike of its demands were not met at the expiration of the notice.
In a statement signed by NUPENG President, Williams Akhoreha, and General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi, the union pointed non-payment of salaries of members and title benefits for the strike.
The statement explained that the decision was reached during a special national delegates conference held last week Thursday.
Part of the issues include some outstanding payment of terminal benefits due to members but which have been declared redundant by Chevron Nigeria Ltd since 2012.
Chevron was also accused of termination of employment of contract workers for joining the union..
The union also pointed out the case of PYRAMIDT workers, who for more than 20 years are being moved from one labour contractor to another without conditions of service.
Part of the statement reads, “We write to convey to the general public and all relevant government agencies the resolution of the special national delegates conference to issue a 14-day notice of a nationwide industrial action if some legitimate welfare and membership related issues that have been variously resolved in our favour even by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment are not adequately and conclusively addressed and resolved within the next 14 days. This ultimatum takes effect from Monday, November 15, 2021.”
