Like NTC, Buhari Declines Assent to Maritime Security Bill
Like the case of the National Transport Commission (NTC) Bill, President Muhammadu Buhari has said no to the assent of the Maritime Security Operations Coordinating Board (Amendment) Bill 2018.
The President’s decision was contained in a letter to the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki dated January 4.
Apart from the Maritime Security Bill, President Buhari also declined assent to four other bills, including the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (Amendment) Bill 2018, Bankruptcy and Insolvency Bill 2018, the Federal Polytechnic (Amendment) Bill 2018 and the Energy Commission (Amendment) Bill 2018.
It would be recalled the five bills were sent to him by the Senate for assent late last year.
On his refusal to assent the Maritime Security Bill, the President explained that this was to check distortions and duplications that will be created with the statutory obligations of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
He however urged the Senate to pass the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Bill before the National Assembly as this according to him will bring about a comprehensive review of operations in the maritime industry.
It would be recalled that the President had in November last year declined to sign the NTC bill as he also said this will create distortions in the system.
