57 from Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia Among 1,100 Perished Migrants in Mediterranean Sea
No fewer than 57 Africans who are from Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia were among the 1,100 migrants who lost their lives in a boat mishap in the Mediterranean sea on Monday.
The sad incident had occurred in Libyan coast near Khums, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The survivors were rescued by fishermen and the coast guard, the spokesman of IOM, Safa Msehli, said in a tweet.
According to Msheli, the migrants were on their way to Europe.
She said that the use of boats by migrants to travel to Italy and other parts of Europe from Libya has continued to increase.
Most of the migrants are in search of better living condition as against unemployment, hunger and insecurity in Nigeria and other African countries.
