Union Alleges Secret Recruitment of 2,000 Workers by FIRS
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has in the past 18 months recruited about 2,000 workers secretly, the Nigerian Civil Service Union has alleged.
The allegation is contained in a letter the union had written to the FIRS Chairman, Muhammad Nami dated June 21.
In the letter, the Union claimed that the FIRS was finding it difficult to pay salaries as a result of the number of workers now under the agency’s payroll.
In a report by Punch Newspapers, the Union also called for an end to the re-engagement of retired directors and other categories of staff.
The letter which was signed by the Chairman, NCSU-FIRS Unit, Idris Abdulrahman; and the Secretary, Idowu Jimoh, read in part, “In compliance with extant provisions/protocols on recruitment and career progression, we demand the immediate stoppage of re-engagement of retired directors and other categories of staff. We have noted that timely payment of salaries was a challenge at some point in 2021 after discrete recruitment of over 2,000 staff within a record period of less than 18 months.”
The spokesman of FIRS, Abdullahi Sumaila, was however reported to have denied that the agency was finding it difficult to pay salaries.
