The family of the leader of the indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has warned the federal government against his maltreatment as he is standing trial.
The family who reacted over his arrest and arraignment by the federal government maintained that Kanu was only demanding freedom for his people.
The younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, who spoke to newsmen in Umuahia Tuesday said Kanu was on the path of truth and has not committed any crime.
He said Kanu’s demand for freedom was his fundamental right, adding that government should handle his case with caution.
He said, “My brother has awoken the consciousness of Nigerians about the goings-on in the country.
“He stood for the truth, and heaven is on the part of anyone standing for the truth. My brother committed no crime, and the whole world is watching.”
Similarly, IPOD’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, in a statement said Kanu’s fundamental human rights must be respected.
Ejiofor said in a statement,“it is to be noted, therefore, that no matter the gravity of the offences or charge preferred against him, Section 36(5) of the Constitution still presumes him innocent of the allegation. The legal team ably led by my humble self will meet them in court on this date.
“We insist that he must be given a fair hearing/trial, which is his constitutionally protected right. His safety as also guaranteed under our law throughout the trial and afterwards should be enforced.
“Our fortified legal team will be meeting to agree on strategies within the context of the charge and
disposition of the court. Await further updates from us as we progress.”
Kanu who was arraigned before the federal High Court Abuja Tuesday said his jumping bail was to protect his life.
Kano who sought the permission of the court to speak said he had to go underground as the only way to save his life after his house was attacked.
He told Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja, “My lord, my house was invaded and people were killed. I would have been killed too if I had not hidden myself. That was why I have been unable to attend court.
“I would have been killed the way others were killed when my house was invaded.”
An application for his trial was filed by Shuaibu labaran on behalf of the federal government.

Justice Nyako had in his ruling for the remand of the IPOD leader said the Prosecution should inform his lawyers of his rearrest.

The case was adjourned till July 26 for continuation of the trial.
It would be recalled that Kanu who was under trial had jumped bail in 2017.

Kanu was speculated to have been intercepted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by Interpol.
