2018: Customs Announces N1.2Trillion Revenue, N61bn Seizures
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Friday said it recorded a revenue generation amounting to N1.2trillion in 2018.
The Service in a statement issued by the Publication Relations Officer, Mr Joseph Attah said it also recorded seizures with a duty paid value (DPV) of N61,543,633,401.31 last year.
Attah disclosed that the revenue figure was N164,897,273,077.50 more than what it realized in 2017 which was N1,037,373,967,400.80.
He quoted the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali(rtd,) to have attributed the rise in revenue to some of the Service reform programmes introduced in the Service.
He identified one of these as “upgrade on the electronic systems from Nigeria Integrated Customs Information System (NICIS I) to NICIS II which according to him blocked leakages.
He also identified strategic deployment of manpower as part of what helped in the revenue increase..
The statement added, “Strict enforcement of extant guidelines by the Tariff and Trade department; robust stakeholder engagement resulting to increased compliance as well as increased disposition of officers and men to put national interest above selves.”
Among the seizures were arms, ammunition, 59 containers of Tramadol and other controlled drugs and 320,709 foreign rice.
However, the statement said though the issue of smuggling remained a challenge, the three-layer-security strategy of the service made the trade crime unattractive to potential smugglers.
