Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Wednesday condemned the idea of agitation for Nigeria’s disintegration, saying that those behind this were insensitive to what could be the plight of minority groups in the country.
Obasanjo who spoke when he received Tiv Professional Group (TPG) on courtesy visit said some people believe that the major tribes in Nigeria were selfish in their agitation as they do not care about the minority groups.
He said, “If the Yoruba can stand as a country; if the Igbos and the Hausa/Fulani can stand as separate countries, where do we want the minority groups to be?
“Now, by virtue of the present situation, they are a little bit protected but if Nigeria breaks up, they will be oppressed and exterminated”
The former President recalled that in the meetings he has been having with some socio-cultural organisations what they want is a complete change for good in Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that things will be better, adding that the rough times that the country is going though now will not last forever.
The leader of the group, Prof. Zacharys Gundv, in his speech said the people of Tiv were concerned about the problems of insecurity, poverty religious intolerance, kidnappings and banditry in the country.
