Customs Strike Force Generates N1billion from DNs in Q1
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Strike Force Unit Tuesday said it has generated the sum of N1billion from issuance of debit notes (DNs) to importers underpaid duties on their goods through various malpractices in first quarter of the year..
The Strike Force raised DNs on goods involved in false declaration or under-declaration to be able to generate the N1bn.
Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Ahmadu Bello Shuaibu who is incharge of the Unit,who spoke on the issue said the N1bn realized would have been lost if not for the efforts of the Unit.
Shuaibu said smugglers have remained tactical with the use of cattle, camels, vehicle fuel compartments, used tyres and booths to smuggle rice and other prohibited goods into the country.
He said a lot of goods have been intercepted by the unit in the past three months, including foreign rice, printed label materials, used vehicles, textiles material, used tyres and second out clothes.
Shuaibu warned importers to refrain from trade malpractices to save themselves from losing huge investments.
He told newsmen, “The Comptroller General,strike force zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service, generated N1.03billion from debit note on major and minor infractions on cargoes that exited the seaport the Tin-Can Island and Apapa ports.
“The essence of the strike force ICT and raising of alerts on consignments is to raise debit notes. Also, importers and agents that we got this huge Debit notes from won’t appreciate us for what we have done rather that will castigate us.”
The National Public Relations Officer of the Customs, Joseph Attah described the N1bn revenue from the Strike Force unit as justifying its creation.
Attah said the Customs has forced smugglers to abandon use of big vehicles to use of other methods such as camels, cattle, donkeys in trickles.
