NDLEA Fumes, Accuses Crew onboard Ships of Trading in Illegal Drugs, Others
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) Thursday accused crew on board ships bringing goods into Nigeria of responsibility for importation of some prohibited goods into the country, particularly illegal drugs..
The agency said this was in collaboration with Nigerian collaborators who perfect the delivery once the items arrive the nation’s ports.
The Lagos,Assistant Area Commander, NDLEA, Mercy Thompson who disclosed this during a joint vessel boarding meeting in Lagos also disclosed that the cocaine consignment seized at Tin Can Island ports few weeks ago was part of this arrangement.
Warning on the dangers of such arrangement, she called on crew members to cooperate with government agencies incharge of vessels inspections to address such ills.
Mercy said that in most cases captains and other crew members are reluctant to meet the government agency officials.
She said that it was such arrangement that has been increasing crime rate in the country as those involved in this crime look for ways to continue in business.
Following the allegation, the Assistant Comptroller General, ACG, Nigeria Immigration Services, NIS, Mrs. Doris Braimah, said that Service has procedures which visiting ships must follow on arriving the country.
She said that some of the crew members come into the country without necessary documents, like visas, adding that this cannot be tolerated.
She called on the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) to let the shipping companies know that there are procedures which must be obeyed by all ships calling in the country’s ports.
Following this, the Executive Secretary, NSC, MR Hassan Bello said he had been hinted that some of the ship crew particularly captains are reluctant to meet government agency officials boarding vessels for inspection.
Bello said the procedure is for the captains of ships submit their entry notice to the Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA) and other agencies of government who board their ships.
