LASWA Warns Barge Operators over Illegal Activities, Threatens Closure

Barge operators involved in illegal activities risk being closed down, the General Manager of Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Oliwadamilola Emmanuel has warned.
LASWA issued the warning after a joint inspection of operattions of the barge operators at Kirikiri Lighter Terminal.
Among other agencies involved in the inspection were Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), Nigeria Maritime Administration Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
The joint inspection was to ensure that crew members manning barges are cretified.
The joint inspection also wanted to fish out container terminals that are not licensed.
In a statement by the Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nkechi Ajayi, the LASWA GM explained that the joint inspection was to ensure that accidents involving barges on Lagos waters are checked.
Emmanuel urged the barge operators to ensure that they keep to rules guiding operations on the waterways.
Part of the statement reads, “The LASWA boss reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State government towards the safety of lives and properties on the waterways while encouraging sustainable investments into the water transport sector.
“The joint Operation team further said the enforcement exercise would be continuously carried out until the waterways is free of unqualified craft crews and substandard jetties”.
