Anti Smuggling: Customs Intercepts N788.18m Rice, PMS

The Seme Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Monday announced 1,294 seizures recorded last year which duty paid value was put at N788.19m
In a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Hussaini Abdullahi, the seizures included 7,667 bags of foreign rice; 127 units of vehicles , three bags of sugar and 1,080,875 litres of Premium Motor Spirit .
Other items were 1,514 cartons of frozen poultry products; 646 hard drugs packets; 166 parcels of cannabis Sativa; 31,868 general merchandise goods.
Abdullahi said 15 suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures during the period.
Some of the suspects have however been released while others were facing trial in court.
The statement added, “It is pertinent to note that since the pronouncement of the Federal Government policy on partial border closure, the command’s major revenue sources have not been active; hence the only alternative source is fees collected from the auction sales of seized PMS and other perishable items.
The command said it remitted the sum of N32,196,232.55 into the federation account as revenue for the fiscal year
