We Shall Reopen Borders Soon, Buhari Assures Nigerians

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday gave assurance that the nation’s borders closed since August 2019 would soon be reopened.
The borders were shut as part of the efforts to check influx of small arms and smuggling of goods into the country through the neighbouring countries.
The promise to reopen the borders was contained in a press statement by the presidential spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, when Buhari met with the 36 states governors.
The President said that since the message has now been clearly sent to Nigeria’s neighbours, the borders would be reopened.
He said the the West African subregion has not been safe since the death of former President of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi as a result of proliferation of arms across borders in the region.
He was quoted saying, “The sub-region is no longer safe, more so with the collapse of the former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi’s regime and the cross border movement of weapons and criminals. Governors must work with traditional rulers. Try and work with traditional rulers to boost intelligence gathering”
Part of the issues discussed during the meeting was insecurity in the country with the President charging the goverors to work with the traditional rulers and othr community members to gather local intelligence against criminal activities in their areas.
According to the statement, the President was briefed by representatives of the governors of the six geo political zones on the security situation in the states.
