Senate Passes South East Devt Commission Bill
The South East Development Commission Bill was Wednesday passed by the Senate.
The Commission has the statutory responsibility of managing funds from the Federation Account for the purpose of developing potentials and other economic development for the South East.
The Commission which Headoffice will be in Enugu will have offices in the other states of the South Est.
The Commission is expected to address the issue of deteriorating infrastructure in the South East.
The journey for the Bill started in June 2016 was sponsored by Senator Samuel Anyanwu and co-sponsored by Senator Stella Oduah.
In the passage, the Senate referred also referred the Bill to the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Matters which is to report to back in four weeks.
Anyanwu had while leading a debate in the establishment of the Commission said it will tackle infrastructural deficit and as well engage the youth in productive ventures in the region.
He added, “Some of the functions highlighted for the commission include release of policies and guidelines for the development of the South East as well as the conception of plans to development in accordance with set rules, while also producing regulations, programmes and projects for sustainable development of the South East.
“The Commission is also expected to provide a master plan reduction of unemployment and schemes to promote the physical development of the South East. It will also provide road map for the development of roads, education, health facilities, industrialisation, agriculture, housing and urban development, water supply, electricity and commerce in the area”.
