The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) Wednesday said the Governing Council of the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) has a lot of work to do in terms of organising the freight forwarders to achieve professional conduct.

The Executive Secretary of the Council, Mr Hassan Bello, who played host to the CRFFN Board members led by Alhaji Abubakar Tsanni on courtesy visit to the Council said efforts should be made to check issues of anomalies among freight forwarders.

Part of the problem, Bello pointed out was the dominance of the regulator by the associations of freight forwarders.

According to him, this has not helped the development of freight forwarding industry.

Bello said, “You have to make a difference; in your profession, there are lots of distortions, issues that have stunted the growth of freight forwarding in Nigeria. It is time for you now to come and clean it up and put things right where necessary.

“It is a hard task because hitherto there has been associations that have acted above the control of the regulator and this should be reversed, it should be the other way round. You have to recognise these associations but you also have to stamp your authority.

“It is the CRFFN that has the authority statutorily, legally, administratively and not the other way round.”
Bello stressed the need for training programme for the freight forwarders, adding that this was the only way to check the dominance of foreigners in the trade.

He said Nigerians are being pushed out of real freight forwarding as a result of inadequate training.

The Chairman of the crffn Governing Board , Alhaji Tsanni Abubakar had earlier in his speech said his Council will seek the collaboration of the NSC in tackling some of the challenges facing freight forwarding practitioners in the country.

Noting that CRFFN and NSC are interwoven, Abubakar said effective collaboration between the two will help address issues facing the freight forwarding practice.

He called on the federal government to facilitate the assent of the National Transport Commission (NTC) bill into law for the Council to get into action addressing issues facing the entire transport sector.
