FIRS Extends Deadline for Defaulting Taxpayers to Settle Indebtedness
Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has given defaulting taxpayers new deadline of June 30 to settle their indebtedness of face the wrath of the law.
The Service had earlier given May 31 as the deadline to enjoy waiver on interests accruable from such debts.
The FIRS Executive Chairman, Mr. Muhammad Nami in a Twitter statement Tuesday said those affected have up till June 30 to settle their debts and still enjoy a waiver on accumulated interests and penalties.
Nami said the extension of the deadline was part of the palliative measures for the tax payers in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
He warned that those who fail to take advantage of the new window will have the incentives withdrawn by the service.
Nami also warned that the Service will begin to monitor compliance after June 30, adding that those who went against the law will have severe sanctions awaiting them.
He said, “Compliance with this directive will enable the service to perform its statutory functions effectively without any impediment resulting from the language barrier. It is also an opportunity for the affected taxpayers to be transparent in their record-keeping and reporting.”
