NCAA Boss Hints of Flight Resumption at Five Airports Soon
*As Air Peace Chairman seeks government review on 37 charges
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Thursday hinted of plans to reopen five airports for flight operations.
The Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Musa Nuhu, disclosed this in Lagos on the occasion of the webinar organised by a think-tank group in the aviation sector under the theme , “COVID-19: The Challenges and Opportunity for Nigeria’s Aviation Value Chain, During and Post”.
According to Nuhu, NCAA and other stakeholders have sent recommendations for safe reopening to the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika for his approval.
He said that the plan is that the flight operations will start with four or five airports with more airports joining progressively.
He explained that the plan was not to start with so many airports to avoid being choked up.
The Chairman of Air Peace, Chief Allen Onyema, who also spoke on the occasion said the federal government intervention in the aviation sector was necessary to save the jobs of workers.
Onyema said government needs to review the policy of introducing 37 charges paid by airline operators.
He also noted the suggestion by some people that the middle seats in the aircraft should be omitted, adding that this is not likely to be possible.
He said that the livelihoods of thousands of workers in the aviation sector were being threatened, adding that government needs to do everything to save their jobs.
