NPA Board Chairman Identifies Issues Affecting Ports Operations, Pledges Improvement
The Chairman of the new Board of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Chief Akin Ricketts, has identified issues affecting ports operations in Nigeria with promises that the board will tackle them.
Ricketts who spoke on the occasion of the inauguration of the board last week identified the problems as poor capacity utilization and evacuation corridors in the ports.
He noted that while the ports in the East were underutilized as a result of many factors, the efficiency in Lagos ports has been affected as a result of poor evacuation corridors.
Ricketts said the resultant effect has led to congestion on the roads which according to him has impacted negatively on service delivery.
He promised that the new board will do its best to ensure that the sufferings of port users are addressed as part of the efforts of the government.
He told the Transport Minister during the inauguration, Hon Rotimi Amaechi, “On behalf of my colleagues on the Board, I will like to assure Mr President, through you, the Minister, that we will do our utmost to ensure that his confidence in us is not misplaced and will not be abused.
“As a serious government on a national rescue mission, we assure you that we will immediately commence discharging our responsibility without hindrance.
“As an organization that has been in existence since 1955, we are sure that NPA will have its share of challenges and issues that need to be resolved or needs immediate attention. We will do that in conjunction with the management and all relevant stakeholders.’’
Amaechi had in his inauguration speech reminded the new board that they were not part NPA management but work together with the management for utmost good result.
He said that considering the importance of the seaports, they cannot be shut but will remain open for trade facilitation.
Among members of the Board were Mohammed Koko, Onari Brown, Sen. Binta Garba, Sen. John Udoidighe, Abdulwahab Adesina, Ghazali Moh’d, Mustapha Dutse and Prof. Idris Abubakar.
