President of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade Adewale Adeyanju weekend reacted to the arrest of 20 of its members on the orders of the Governor Nysom Wike , saying the Union will shut down the ports nationwide if by Wednesday the affected members were not released.
The MWUN members were arrested in Port Harcourt for flouting the lockdown directive in Rivers State by the government.
Adeyanju in a statement Saturday said the affected members were on essential services and should not have been arrested.
He appealed to the Minister of Transport, Hon Rotimi Amaechi, to intervene on the matter, arguing that there was no reason to arrest them in their buses when it was obvious that they were on essential services.
He said, “We wish to use this medium to state that if in the next 48 hours starting from Monday 11th May, 2020, nothing is done to affect the release of our members, the Union will have no option than to withdraw our services in the entire nation’s seaports, terminals and jetties in solidarity with our detained members as an injury to one is an injury to all”.
He said that it was with shock that its 20 members were detained by the state government.
