We Don’t Need Your Donation, ANLCA President Tells NAGAFF
By Onyinye Apeh
The donation of about N1.5million to both the federal government, Lagos state government and 11 other associations by the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) as COVID-19 palliatives has become a subject of controversy.
One of the associations, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has written a letter to NAGAFF rejecting the donation.
President of the Association, Iju Tony Nwabunike in a letter to NAGAFF said the N100,000 should be ploughed back to the association in helping to achieve a befitting operating environment for it and its operatives.
Nwabunike who said he learnt about the donation online said his association, individual and corporate members have always been in the forefront of supporting less privileged without making a show of it, adding that such could puncture the dignity and self esteem of the receivers.
Nwabunike added his association and other members have always stepped up giving to persons without making a media hype of it.
Noting that NAGAFF requested individuals to come for the collection of the donation, Nwabunike reminded NAGAFF not to expect the federal government and the Lagos state government which were given N500,000 and N350,000 respectively to visit NAGAFF to collect the money.
He said NAGAFF should visit the federal and Lagos state government representatives to give out the palliatives as others have done.
NAGAFF had announced N50,000 each to 10 associations and N100,000 to ANLCA.
The 10 associations include those of rivaled customs agents/freight forwarders associations and associations of Maritime Correspondents.
Apart from ANLCA, some members of other associations named as part of the donation said NAGAFF only wanted to make a media show as they did not need the money.
According to some of them, NAGAFF could have targeted the governments to acquire materials or the very poor in the society for the donation.
