Two Fishermen Arrested for Smuggling 120 Jerrycans of Petrol to Cotonou
Two fishermen were at the weekend arrested at Gberefu beach in Badagry on their way to Cotonou, Benin Republic with 120 jerrycans of petrol.
The suspects identified as Mr. Jebleh Taiwo and Mr. Jebleh Abiodun were arrested by officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC).
The Commandant of NSCDC, Lagos State Command, Mr. Fasiu Adeyinka, while parading the suspects said the riverine route has become the way through which smugglers use to smuggle goods to neighbouring countries since the land borders were closed.
Adeyinka said the petroleum products according to investigation were sourced from petrol stations outside the border areas.
He said that since petrol stations near the border were closed down, the smugglers buy petrol and move them to the riverine areas using motorcycles.
He added that on stocking enough products in the riverine areas, the smugglers would use boats to transport them to Benin Republic.
The Commandant said the officers of the Civil Defence have been on surveillance to ensure that the smugglers are checked.
He disclosed that the suspects have admitted during interrogation that they were contracted by an unnamed chief in the area to assist in conveying the products to Seme Border.
