Traders Count Losses as Fire Guts Balogun Market
It was a sad day for hundreds of traders following a fire incident which gutted some buildings in Balogun market, Lagos Island.
The buildings are housing some shops and residents
Eye witness said though no casualty was recorded, millions of Naira goods were lost to the fire before it could be put out by fire fighters.
According to a trader who spoke to SHIPPING DAY, Mr. Okey Ndiulo, more than 100 shops were affected.
Ndiulo said goods affected were mainly textiles, foot wears, necklaces of different types, clothes and other different items.
He said that some traders managed to take some of their goods initially but added that not many were lucky.
It was gathered that the fire incident was worsened with different generators being used in shops.
It was also gathered that hoodlums took advantage of the sad incident to loot some goods.
The cause of fire incident was not known, but General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, told newsmen that the fire incident was put out later.
He promised that the agency will carry out investigation into the cause of the incident.
