Sylva Sets 89 Team to Monitor Petrol Importation, Consumption
A team of 89 people has been set up by the federal government to monitor importation and consumption of petroleum products in the country.
In a statement issued by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), members of the team were drawn from five agencies of government.
Among the agencies that make up the team include the NNPC, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF), and Department of State Services (DSS).
The task of the team according to a statement signed by the Acting Group General Manager Public Affairs of the NNPC, Mr. Samson Makoji, would be to ensure that there is accountability in the distribution of the products throughout the country.
The Minister of Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Timipre Sylva, while inaugurating the team said they will assist in authenticating the actual volume of products that are imported and consumed in the country.
The Minister said this will help the country attain energy security.
He said the operation is expected to check the issue of smuggling of petroleum products by some Nigerians.
Sylva noted that among the reasons for the closure of the nation’s border was because of smuggling of the product, adding that daily consumption of the product has since dropped from 60 million to 52 million liters.
