Wike: Oil Bunkering Worsening Because of Involvement of Some Security Agencies
Rivers State Governor, Mr Nyesom Wike Monday said the worsening situation in oil bunkering was as a result of the involvement of personnel of some security agencies.
Speaking when he received Mr Konrad Adenauer of the German Foundation, Mr Andreas Lammel and Dr Joachim Pfeiffer of the German Federal Parliament on courtesy visit, Wike said the biggest problem in the fight against oil bunkering was that some security agents were fully involved.
According to him, “ When you see oil bunkering, the security agencies are involved. They are fully involved”.
He called on the federal government to partner with the state government to be able to address the issue of oil bunkering.
“If the Federal Government comes strongly and partner the states, you will find out that we will be able to solve some of the problems”, he said.
The governor also said that part of the problem is politicisation of security.
He expressed concern that the oil majors were patronizing cult groups for surveillance groups, adding that they should stop this and use state security agencies.
He added, “We have told oil majors to patronise official state security agencies and stop patronising cult groups for surveillance jobs. This is because part of the problem is the oil majors continued patronage of cult groups.”.
The governor called for collaboration between the state government and the German Government and the German Foundation to fight against insecurity.
The German visitors had earlier said the visit was mainly to advance economic development in the country.
They said they have been providing capacity building for lawmakers and security agencies in Rivers.
