Gridlock: Dozens Injured as NURTW Members Clash with Truck Drivers
Dozens of people were severely wounded between Wednesday night and Thursday as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) moved to stop truck drivers from passing Ajegunle route to the Express road in Mile 2, Lagos.
Eye witness account said the crisis started on Wednesday night when hoodlums believed to be members of the NURTW attacked trucks at Coconut bus stop as they wanted to access the Express road through Ajegunle.
The transport workers were angered as the trucks made it impossible for their small commercial buses to use the road.
They had as a result moved in group attacking the truck drivers during which a lot of damages was done to the trucks.
It was also gathered that one of the truck drivers whose identity could not be ascertained was shot during the clash and was rushed to hospital.
Eye witness account said that following the damages suffered on their trucks during the Wednesday night, the drivers had regroup for a reprisal attack against the hoodlums on Thursday.
It took the intervention of members of the Presidential Task Team on Ports to end the crisis.
