Navy, Customs Arrest 24 over Rice Smuggling in Kwara
A combined team of officers of the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and Nigerian Police have arrested 24 suspects over rice smuggling in Kwara State.
The suspects were accused of smuggling 850 bags of rice from Benin Republic.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Ilorin.
Egbetokun said among those arrested were 15 drivers and nine owners of the rice.
On arrest of the 15 drivers, they had disclosed the owners of the rice which led to their arrest.
The Commissioners said the suspects confessed the rice were being smuggled from Cotonou, Benin Republic.
He also said that the Police will hand over the rice to the Customs Command in the state.
Present at the briefing was Chief Superintendent of Customs, Adamu Yahaya who commended the Police, Navy for the arrest.
He promised that the Customs would bring the suspects to book.
