It was a big blow to barons specializing in drug importation with the interception of cannabis Indica worth N18.9bn at Tin Can Island port and imported from Canada.

Controller of the Tin Can Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Compt Frank Onyeka , told newsmen about the seizure during a press briefing on Thursday.
Onyeka said the seizure was possible as a result of credible intelligence and inter-agency collaboration with the officers of the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He revealed that the importer had declared the container as carrying used clothes, but said that the operatives of the Customs carried out thorough examination which revealed the drugs.

The seized Cannabis Indica included 9,458 packages, with a total weight of 4,729 kilograms, and an estimated street value of ₦18,916,000,000.00.
Onyeka said the seizure was a demonstration of vigilance, professionalism, and dedication of officers of the Command..
He also said the seizure equally affirmed the strength of collaboration with sister agencies.
He disclosed that the items have already been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution of those involved in the crime.
The Controller described the achievement as very significant as it comes after the historic agreement between the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigeria Customs Service to strengthen inter-agency synergy against drug trafficking and organized crime.
The agreement was signed on April 27, 2026, at the NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR PhD.
The Controller commended critical stakeholders, including port operators, security agencies, and members of the media for continuous support and partnership, adding, “your role in information dissemination and public awareness is invaluable”.
He warned that the Tincan Island Port Command is commitment to intensifying synergy with all relevant agencies to secure our borders and ports.
