President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday commissioned a major building complex constructed by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service in Iperu, Ogun State.
The multifaceted property is expected to accommodate about 142 buildings, including a sports complex, training college and multipurpose halls. The Customs village will equally have expansive warehouse and barracks.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi explained on the occasion that the project was part of the need to balance the Customs’ core mandates in the areas of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and enforcement with improved welfare and working conditions for officers and men of the Service.
Adeniyi said the project was necessary following rising operational demand and limited space at Ikeja facilities.
He said, “We’ve just commissioned the Federal Operations Unit; they will be moving here as soon as possible. It’s already been furnished. The accessories that would ensure proper functioning of the facilities have also been installed. Provision of a modern armoury and then, of course, you know that this is the warehouse directly opposite this facility. This warehouse will also support the warehouse at the nearby aviation village”.
He disclosed that the project was first estimated to cost N73bn, adding that evolving economic realities may necessitate review of the approved cost.
Adeniyi was full of joy for the presence of President Bola Tinubu who commissioned the project.
The CGC also commended the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Dapo Abiodun for his partnership in the project.
He equally praised the former CGC, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd), for initiating the project.
