• As NAFDAC stresses death penalty for importers of fake drugs

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday announced seizures of contraband worth N1, 188,830,600.000 as part of its anti-smuggling operations.
The items were seized in the past four weeks, according to the Unit’s Customs Controller, Compt. MS Shuaibu during a press briefing with newsmen.
Shuaibu told newsmen that the items were seized following intensified anti-smuggling operations, adding that intelligence gathering helped the officers in catching the smugglers.
Among the items seized were “1. 5,015 bags of 50kg foreign rice (equivalent to 8 trailer loads)
2. 15 used (Tokunbo) vehicles
3. 640 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, weighing approximately 431.8kg
4. 460 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (about 11,500 litres)
5. 143 bales of used clothing, 2 jumbo sacks of used shoes, and 1 sack of used clothing
6. 390 bottles of Codeine, 310 foreign-branded drugs, and 19 cards of Tramadol
7. 210 pieces of used tyres
8. One 20-foot container (ONEU 2419369 FTC) containing 752 cartons of Calcium Lactate, intercepted “for false declaration”
The seizures, according to the Controller were all recorded in Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Lagos, adding that four people were arrested in connection with the seizures.
Shuaibu said that Cannabis Sativa and pharmaceuticals will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as well as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), respectively.
Warning smugglers, he said the seizures clearly showed the operational capability of his Unit, adding “it underscore our resolve to continuously confront economic saboteurs who threaten national security and undermine federal government policies.”
Meanwhile, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) is calling for capital punishment for importers of fake drugs.
This was disclosed by the Chief Regulatory Officer, Mr Kareem Taiwo, of the agency.
