Customs FOU ‘A’ Seizes N1.8bn Rice, Records N72m from DNs

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ of the
Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) on Friday announced seizure of 8 trailer loads of rice intercepted from smugglers.
The Unit also recorded N72million from Demand Notices (DNs) collected from importers who failed to pay actual duties on their consignments.

The development was disclosed by the Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR at the FOU Zone A headquarters Ikeja Lagos.
The 8 trailers which had 7,029 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice were the seizures for the month of September.
The duty paid value of the 8 trailers of rice was put at N1,755,080,898.
The Controller of the Customs Zone A, Ikeja, Deputy Comptroller Kehinde Ejibunu and his operatives made the seizures.
Among other items seized for the month of September were: “35,100 liters of premium motor spirit (PMS), 1,100 liters of diesel, 1 X 40-foot container carrying 360 bales of used clothes; 1 X 40 foot container containing 150 cartons of ladies’ handbags, 50 bales of nickers, 1 X 20-foot container of unprocessed wood, 106 cartons of foreign frozen poultry, 55 pieces of used fridges, 110 pieces of used compressors, 148 cartons of foreign soap, 121 cartons of expired hair oil and 25 units of used vehicles”.
The Customs CG said he was happy that the FOU operatives showed commitment and the spirit of patriotism in carrying out series of operations resulting in the seizures.
The seizures, he said, took place at different locations within the border corridors of the South West.

Adeniyi said the objective of making the seizures was to discourage potential traders from engaging in smuggling activities.

He commended the Customs Area Controller of the Unit, Deputy Comptroller Kehinde Ejibunu and his officers for the remarkable milestone achieved.

No fewer than suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures while investigations continue.
