Customs Bursts 2-Man Syndicate Specialising in Forging Clearing Documents

A two-man syndicate specializing in forging customs clearing documents have been arrested by the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Ikeja.

This was disclosed by the Acting Controller of the unit, Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, who said one of the suspects was arrested with a 2007 Mercedes Benz model at Ajilete-Idiroko Road, Ogun State.

Ejibunudu disclosed that the arrest led to series of investigations to unravel activities of the syndicate.

He told newsmen, “The arrest led to the unravelling of over 600 pictures of vehicles domiciled in Benin Republic awaiting to undergo forged clearing process by the same criminal syndicate.
“Items recovered from the suspects in the course of arrest and investigation are customs valuation stamp, Customs Duty Chart Book on vehicles, customs documents and vehicle registration documents all fakes.
“Others include four computer monitors, three computer processing units, one keyboard, and one printer.”
The Controller also told newsmen that officers doing their lawful duties were ambushed by suspected smugglers and sympathizers.
He said the smugglers were armed with guns, machetes, charms, and other dangerous weapons.
According to him, this happened at Owoyele Igbogila Road in Ogun State, where one of the officers was assaulted.
He added that 18 suspects have been arrested in connection with the offences as at February, adding that investigation was ongoing.
The Unit seized 5,328 x 50kg bags of foreign parboiled rice and a 1×40 ft container with 512 cartons of generators, among others in the month of February.
According to the Controller, the sum of N103.6 million was collected through the issuance of demand notices to importers who defaulted in paying the correct duties.
