Afenifere leader in Lagos, Chief Supo Shonibare, has called on the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to “make a Statewide address to the residents of Lagos State and join hands with Afenifere to assure all residents of their safety and protection of life & property”.
Shonibare made the appeal following attacks on some non-indigenes or supporters of other parties in Lagos.

In a statement, he argued that it was wrong to believe that all non-indigenes voted against the APC, adding that the APC should be reminded that Igbos also voted for the party’s presidential candidate in other states in the South East.

The statement reads, “Afenifere has observed the results of the Presidential elections in Lagos. This result has confirmed the returns from our LGA Chairmen in all the 20 LGAs in Lagos, confirming that Mr Peter has emerged as the victor of the polls in Lagos. This was in spite of the suppression of votes & violence clearly intended to deter perceived potential supporters of the rainbow coalition which had adopted Mr Peter Obi as their joint candidate, from being able to cast their votes. Many of these segment of supporters were prevented from voting. There was lack of diligence on the part of INEC officials, who connived with ruling party leaders in many Local governments by refusing to offload the election results at polling units, claiming the same BVAS appliance which had successfully accredited voters, suddenly became inoperable in loading the results. We thank all Lagosians & all residents of Lagos State who trooped out en masse, to exercise their fundamental right to vote. We have however been inundated with reports of violence in some parts of Lagos, occasioned against non- indigenes. Yorubas are an urbane, accommodating ethnic group that will always eschew violence in expressing their preferred candidate in any democratic process. All of us in Lagos must appreciate the fact that our political decisions in exercising our franchise is not an ethnic warfare strive or contest between Yorubas & Igbos or between Yorubas and any other ethnic group. Many Igbos voted for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in States in the Southeast, as many Yoruba have also elected to vote for Mr Peter Obi in Lagos & other States in the Southwest. We enjoin the Commissioner of Police Lagos State to uphold the rule of law & ensure the protection of life & property of all the residents of Lagos. We welcome the statement from the APC Presidential Campaign Council enjoining Lagosians not to resort to acts of violence. We also enjoin the Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu to make a Statewide address to the residents of Lagos State & join hands with Afenifere to assure all residents of their safety & protection of life & property”.
