Spanish Port Denies Entry to Maersk Tanker for Transporting Russian Diesel

(FleetMon) The Maersk tanker, “MAERSK MAGELLAN,” was denied entry to the Spanish port of TARRAGONA on account of transporting oil products that were acquired from a Russian ship.
The cargo in question is a consignment of diesel that was to be unloaded at the port of TARRAGONA. The cargo of diesel was traced back to a ship that previously had a Russian flag. The diesel was acquired via ship-to-ship transfer from a Vietnamese-flagged product tanker named “ELEPHANT,” which in turn acquired it from a Cameroon-flagged vessel, the “NOBEL.” The NOBEL was registered in Russia till July 1st, 2022.
The Spanish Ministry, on February 10th, stated that entry to the vessel was denied in compliance with EU regulations. These regulations require ports to deny entry to ships that flew a Russian flag at any point in time after April 16th, 2022, or ships that were originally registered in Russia but switched to another flag after February 24th, 2022.
The MAERSK MAGELLAN is a Spanish-flagged tanker that was built in 2010. The 50,000 dwt tanker is operated by the Maersk Tankers Pool. Maersk Tankers Pool stated that they had carried out a check regarding possible sanctions violations of the ship. The company has supported its claim with official documents that show that the cargo is of Turkish origin and that it was loaded by “NOBEL” in the port of Aliaga, Turkey, on January 28th, 2023.
The company has stated that they are in contact with relevant parties regarding the course of action.
In April of 2022, the Maltese-flagged oil tanker Black Star was denied access by the Barcelona Port Authority for taking on Cargo from a Russian-flagged ship, “Andrey Pervozvanniy.”
