After series of criticisms from stakeholders, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) appears to have listened to the voice of reason by introducing a new platform which captures older vehicles not covered by Vehicles Identification Number (VIN) introduced early in the year.

According to the Service, such vehicles can be processed for clearance through www.846.nigeriatradehub.gov.ng that has just been created.

In a circular titled ‘LAUNCH OF THE ‘846’ AUTOMATED APPLICATION PROCESS’ and signed by the Tin Can Island Controller, Comptroller Kunle Oloyede, vehicles which fall under non-standard VIN are to be cleared following processes spelt out by the new platform.
The test-run begins on December 5, in Tin Can Ports, Lagos.
The Comptroller General of the Customs, Col. Hammed Ali (retd) according to the circular approved the introduction of the new platform.
Part of the circular reads, “Following the approval of the Comptroller-General of Customs for the deployment of the system for the processing of Non-standard VIN (846) application and the use of Tin Can Island Port as the Pilot site, a successful training and sensitization of stakeholders on the use of the platform was completed from 28 Nov — 1 Dec 22.
“In view of this, all applications for the use of code 846 for clearance of vehicles with Non-standard VINs in TCIP must be done through www.846.nigeriatradehub.gov.ng from Monday 5th December 2022.
“No manual application will be accepted henceforth. For further information and support, visit the Helpdesk at the Command”.
Sources said some customs agents, including members of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) and Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) have been trained on the new platform.
Stakeholders believe that the latest development is a relief to many importers and their customs agents who had cried out about the non-capture of older vehicles in the VIN which earlier sparked off criticism before the issues raised were resolved.
