The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has said it is considering an increase in tariff relief by as much as 30 percent for service providers, as part of a multi-pronged approach to attract more vessels and cargo traffic to the Eastern ports.

Managing Director of the NPA, Mohammed Bello Koko, disclosed this while addressing a stakeholders’ forum held on Thursday.

Koko and his management team have been on an assessment tour of facilities in Port Harcourt and Onne Ports.
In a statement by the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, NPA, Nasiru Ibrahim, the MD explained that the proposed move is being considered having observed that a similar concession of a 10 percent rebate granted by the Authority to terminal operators some years back failed to yield the desired result.

According to him, shipping traffic to these ports has not witnessed any significant growth.

He disclosed that the Authority is already considering the proposal for a 30 percent tariff rebate being sought by the terminals.
